Diana and Stephen Lewinstein ’63 P’98, long-time supporters of Dartmouth Athletics, have made a historic contribution that will significantly enhance athletic excellence at Dartmouth College. In collaboration with President Sian Leah Beilock and President Emeritus Philip J. Hanlon ’77, the Lewinsteins have pledged the largest gift in the history of Dartmouth athletics, coinciding with Stephen’s 60th reunion.
Combining current-use funds and a bequest, this generous gift will empower investments in the well-being, fitness, and competitiveness of Dartmouth’s varsity student-athletes. The impact of this contribution extends far beyond physical training and performance, with a focus on personal development and fostering a lifetime of leadership.
By providing world-class resources for health, wellness, nutrition, physical conditioning, and competitiveness, the Lewinsteins’ gift sends a resounding message of support to Dartmouth’s student body. Mike Harrity, the Haldeman Family Director of Athletics and Recreation, recognizes that this transformative gift will revolutionize Dartmouth Athletics and Recreation’s ability to support all students who participate in athletics, enabling them to strive for excellence both on and off the field. The ultimate goal is to position Dartmouth’s students, coaches, and staff for championship success.
President Beilock expresses her gratitude to the Lewinsteins for their visionary contribution and aligns herself with the inspiring vision set forth by Mike Harrity during his inaugural year as Dartmouth’s athletics director. Prospective student-athletes worldwide will take note of Dartmouth’s commitment to supporting their competitive goals and helping them thrive in their pursuit of athletic achievements.
Stephen and Diana Lewinstein are strong advocates of Dartmouth Athletics, recognizing the power of sports to cultivate resilience and develop leadership skills in individuals, both within and beyond the realm of athletics. Stephen, a real estate developer and co-owner/board member of the Boston Celtics, holds a law degree from Cornell Law School and a master’s degree in taxation from Boston University Law School. Diana boasts degrees from Lesley College, Columbia Teachers College, and Rhode Island School of Design. Their son, Marc ’98, also a Cornell Law School graduate, actively participated in athletics during his undergraduate years and was a member of Dartmouth’s rugby football club team. He has since become an Ironman triathlete.
In honor of their remarkable contribution, Dartmouth will rename Alumni Gym as the Lewinstein Athletic Center. This renaming symbolizes planned improvements to the facility, including the future establishment of a centralized athletic training facility on the ground floor. The Lewinstein Athletic Center will introduce functionality, efficiency, and cutting-edge therapeutic tools to support the health and wellness of student-athletes. In turn, West Gym, home to the indoor running track and basketball courts, will be renamed Alumni Gym to pay homage to the original group of alumni who, in 1909, raised funds to create one of the finest collegiate athletic facilities in the country at that time.
This exceptional gift from the Lewinsteins represents the culmination of substantial investments in Dartmouth Athletics through the Call to Lead campaign. Totaling an impressive $178 million, these investments far exceed the original athletics goal of $90 million. Over the past eight years, generous supporters have endowed 21 coaching positions and the Peak Performance program while establishing a well-structured Friends program for individual sports’ boosters. The campaign also introduced and renovated various training facilities, including the Graham Indoor Practice Facility, Friends of Dartmouth Rowing Boathouse, Reilly Pavilion, and improvements to the ski locker rooms, Oak Hill, and squash courts.
