Reclining Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose (Supta Padangusthasana)
The Reclining Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose, or Supta Padangusthasana, is a versatile and effective yoga pose that stretches the hamstrings, calves, and lower back while improving flexibility and balance. This pose is excellent for enhancing overall leg strength and promoting relaxation.
How to Perform the Reclining Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose:
- Start Position: Begin by lying flat on your back with your legs extended and arms resting at your sides.
- Draw the Knee In: Bend your right knee and draw it towards your chest. Wrap a yoga strap or a towel around the arch of your right foot. Hold the ends of the strap with both hands.
- Extend the Leg: Straighten your right leg towards the ceiling, keeping your foot flexed and your toes pointing towards you. Hold the strap firmly, ensuring your shoulders remain relaxed on the mat.
- Ground the Opposite Leg: Keep your left leg extended and grounded on the mat, with your left foot flexed and toes pointing up.
- Adjust the Stretch: Gently pull the strap to bring your right leg closer to your torso, deepening the stretch in your hamstrings and calf. Ensure your right knee remains straight but not locked.
- Hold the Position: Hold the pose for 30 seconds to 1 minute, breathing deeply and evenly. Focus on maintaining a gentle stretch without straining.
- Side Variation: For an additional stretch, you can open your right leg out to the side, keeping it straight. Hold the strap with your right hand and place your left hand on your left hip to keep your left side grounded.
- Switch Sides: Release your right leg and lower it back to the mat. Repeat the same steps with your left leg, using the strap to extend and stretch your left leg towards the ceiling.
Benefits:
