The White House recently announced President Joe Biden’s selections for the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition, a federal advisory committee dedicated to promoting accessible and healthy eating, as well as physical activity for all Americans.
Among the 27 appointments, one representative from the fitness industry has been chosen. Jon Feinman, the founder of InnerCity Weightlifting, a nonprofit gym offering personal and group training, will be a part of the council.
Notable appointments include basketball star Stephen Curry, Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, as well as doctors, scientists, and chefs.
The National Fitness Foundation, established by Congress in 2010, collaborates with the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition and identifies strategic priorities to support the council’s objectives. In August 2022, Suzanne McCormick, President, and CEO of YMCA of the USA, and Scott Goudeseune, CEO of the American Council on Exercise, were appointed to the foundation’s board of directors. The National Fitness Foundation assists in advancing the President’s Council’s mission by facilitating investments and partnerships to promote healthy and active lifestyles for all Americans.
President Biden renewed the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition through Executive Order 14048 in September 2021. In 2022, he appointed José Andrés and Elena Delle Donne as co-chairs of the council.
The council created the National Youth Sports Strategy (NYSS) in 2019, and the council’s renewal ensures the continued promotion of the NYSS. The council plans to place a focus on raising national awareness about the connection between mental health, physical fitness, and nutrition.
Apart from encouraging physical activity among young people, the council is committed to increasing physical activity levels among older adults. In fiscal year 2022, the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition Science Board, a subcommittee that elevates scientific research on physical activity, fitness, sports, and nutrition, concentrated on conducting a literature review for a Physical Activity Guidelines Midcourse Report on Older Adults. The report is expected to be finalized in fiscal year 2023.
